Discrimination in the Workplace

There are a variety of statutes in place intended to safeguard the rights of employees, such as local ordinances,  the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act, Age Discrimination in Employment Act, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Civil Rights Act of 1991, and the Equal Pay Act. The purpose of each protective statute is to minimize the chances that employees will be subjected to multiple forms of employment and workplace discrimination, which include prejudices involving:

  • Race
  • Age (40 and above)
  • Sex
  • Handicap or disability
  • Religion
  • National origin
  • Gender/Sexual Preference

What is Sexual Harassment?

Harassment that’s sexual in nature violates both federal and state laws under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act, respectively. Sexual coercion and harassment in the workplace is a form of sex discrimination, and is defined as unwanted sexual advances, unwelcome sexualized verbal and physical conduct, and/or requests for sexual favors. Generally, there are two types of sexual harassment, including:

  • Rewards in return for providing sexual favors, or “quid pro quo”
  • A work environment that’s intimidating and offensive due to recurrent uninvited sexual advances and verbal and/or physical conduct

Wrongful Discharge

Grounds for wrongful termination include violations of public policy on the part of the former employer. Schiffman, Sheridan & Brown, P.C. are experienced with handling employment-related cases, such as a wrongful discharge. We’ll assist you with filing your claim and acquiring just compensation, such as lost wages and fringe benefits.

Our Fees

If a plaintiff receives a favorable outcome, employment discrimination statutes decree that employees are billed reasonably in terms of attorney’s fees and other expenses. Therefore, the fees for our legal services in workplace discrimination, harassment, and wrongful termination cases may be calculated hourly and/or on a  partial or fully contingent fee basis, depending on the facts of the case. We ensure our clients receive monthly invoices, as well as personalized legal services at rates they can afford.
